UNFICYP personnel were deployed to Deneia on Wednesday following an incident involving the harassment of Greek Cypriot farmers by Turkish soldiers, with the aim of restoring calm.
In a written statement, UNFICYP spokesperson Alim Siddiq said that, following reports «of a violation in the Deneia area, within the United Nations buffer zone, UN peacekeeping forces were immediately sent to the scene to de-escalate tensions and restore calm».
“UNFICYP continues to closely monitor the situation to ensure that the status quo is maintained,” the statement said.
Earlier, Deneia Community Council President Charalambos Alexandrou told the media that Turkish soldiers had harassed farmers who went to cultivate their fields and had tried to force them to leave. He also said that UNFICYP had been called to the area and that the work was continuing under its supervision.
