Four new crossing points are under discussion as part of efforts to advance confidence-building measures in the Cyprus issue, with diplomatic activity intensifying ahead of the 9 November trilateral meeting that could determine whether a broader 5+1 conference is convened before the end of the year.
According to information obtained by Politis, the four proposed crossing points currently under discussion are:
- Mia Milia
- A route linking Athienou and Aglantzia via Pyroi
- A crossing between Louroujina and Lympia
- A route connecting Kambos Kykkou and Karavostasi
No agreement has yet been reached on opening any of the crossings.
The four proposals are being discussed within the framework of confidence-building measures, with both sides seeking mutually acceptable arrangements that could facilitate travel and help create a more positive environment for the continuation of the process.
Particular attention is focused on the proposed Athienou-Aglantzia connection, which could significantly reduce travel time and distance between Larnaca and Nicosia.
The proposed Kambos Kykkou-Karavostasi crossing concerns a different geographical area where crossing opportunities remain limited.
Ankara's role in the process
The discussions are taking place while María Ángela Holguín, the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, remains in Cyprus conducting contacts aimed at assessing whether sufficient common ground exists before the scheduled trilateral meeting.
At the same time, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is expected to visit the occupied areas, a trip viewed as particularly significant given Turkey's role in developments and efforts to establish conditions for further progress.
Focus on the 9 November meeting
Attention is now turning to the meeting on 9 November between President Nikos Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and María Ángela Holguín.
The meeting is expected to assess the outcome of contacts held so far and evaluate whether there is sufficient progress to allow the process to move forward.
According to Politis information, if meaningful convergences emerge, the way could be opened for a 5+1 meeting before the end of the year.
Holguín has previously expressed optimism about that prospect, linking it to progress on confidence-building measures, methodology and substantive issues in the Cyprus negotiations.
