Families raising children in Cyprus may qualify for Child Benefit and, in certain circumstances, an additional Single-Parent Family Benefit. Entitlement depends on residence, family circumstances and financial criteria. Here are the main rules and how to apply.
Who can receive Child Benefit?
Families generally need at least five years of lawful, continuous residence in the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus before applying. Periods of residence in other EU Member States may count under the applicable rules. The benefit is payable for qualifying dependent children, including children under 18 and certain older children in education, National Guard service or with qualifying disabilities. Age limits and documentary conditions vary.
What are the income and asset limits?
The 2026 annual gross family income ceilings are €49,000 for one dependent child, €59,000 for two, €64,000 for three and €69,000 for four. Families with five or more dependent children are exempt from the ordinary income and asset ceilings, subject to the other eligibility conditions.
For families subject to the asset test, total family assets must generally not exceed €1.2 million. Relevant property and financial assets, including certain assets disposed of during the preceding 24 months, may be taken into account. Meeting the financial thresholds alone does not guarantee entitlement.
What may change in 2027?
On 10 September 2026, the Council of Ministers approved a draft reform proposing income ceilings of €90,000 for families with three dependent children and €100,000 for families with four. The proposal also envisages increased support for lower-income households and is estimated to bring approximately 17,000 additional families within potential eligibility. The intended commencement date is 1 January 2027, but the proposals should not be treated as law unless approved by the House of Representatives.
What about single-parent families?
Eligible single-parent families may receive a separate Single-Parent Family Benefit in addition to Child Benefit. The ordinary annual gross family income ceiling is generally €49,000, subject to the relevant exceptions and family-status rules. The amount depends on income and the number of dependent children. Existing recipients should check whether a change-of-details application is appropriate.
How do families apply?
First-time applicants and other applicants required to submit a new claim can apply online through CY Login using a registered and verified account. For the 2026 benefit year, the published deadline is 31 December 2026. Existing recipients may be subject to a different procedure; applicants should follow the Welfare Benefits Administration Service (WBAS) instructions for their circumstances.
Supporting evidence may include identity and residence documents, income and asset information, proof of education or military service for older dependants, and family-status records. Applicants should verify the documents requested by the electronic service before submission.
How much will a family receive?
Payments depend on the family’s income band and number of eligible children. The exact amount should be checked against the official WBAS rates for the relevant year rather than assumed from the income ceiling alone.
The key point
Check the current eligibility criteria, confirm whether your children count as dependants, and submit any required application before the relevant deadline. The proposed 2027 changes are distinct from the rules governing 2026 claims.
