Developments on the Cyprus issue, a case involving VAT debts owed by a Cypriot company with interests linked to Roman Abramovich, the AKEL secretary-general’s views on the party’s choices in the presidential elections, and violent demonstrations in France are among the main topics on the newspapers’ front pages on Monday.
With the headline “Instead of significant developments, a relentless blame game”, Alithia writes that the President of the Republic is challenging Holguín, while the Turkish Cypriot leader is countering the Presidential Palace over crossing points and methodology. In other reports, it says cuts to photovoltaic systems are costing €23.4 million in emissions and describes Europe as a “boiling pot”, with demonstrations in many countries.
Politis leads with “Criminal prosecutions over luxury yachts”. The newspaper reports that the Tax Department has filed a criminal case against two Cypriot directors of a company linked to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich over €25 million in VAT debts. The newspaper also features the second part of its interview with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, who criticises President Christodoulides over actions which, he says, undermine trust between the two communities. It also reports on the forthcoming launch of a new “Save and Upgrade Homes” scheme, with €20 million allocated to the energy upgrade of approximately 1,300 homes.
Under the headline “AKEL’s seven conditions”, Phileleftheros reports on statements by AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou regarding the party’s choices ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. Elsewhere, it writes of scenes of chaos in France and unprecedented clashes during a nationwide mobilisation against the rising cost of living. It also reports on developments in the prison documents case, with new lawsuits filed by Aristotelous and Demetriou against seven individuals and one legal entity.
Haravgi’s main headline is “Contacts for cooperation come first”. It carries statements by Stefanos Stefanou on AKEL’s plans for the presidential elections. He said the party would be ready in good time for the electoral battle. The newspaper also reports on a letter from the UN Secretary-General to the Turkish Cypriot leader concerning the cancellation of events in the occupied areas, as well as unprecedented demonstrations in France that are causing turmoil for the government.
