The government extends financial assistance for 2026 to encourage population retention and drive sustainable development in vulnerable regions.

The Cabinet has approved the launch of support allowances for residents of mountainous areas and non-pensioner workers in remote communities for 2026. Following the Cabinet meeting, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou stated that the decision reaffirms the commitment of the government to implementing actions aimed at boosting development and supporting local societies.

The allowances are granted on an annual basis to alleviate the higher cost of living and commuting associated with these regions. Eligible candidates include residents of communities situated at an altitude of at least 600 metres. Funding is also allocated to employed, non-pensioner residents living in communities located at least 40 kilometres from an urban centre, or between 30 and 39 kilometres from an urban centre at an altitude of at least 700 metres.

Mr Ioannou noted that the allowance schemes act as an incentive both to retain the existing population and to attract new residents to the participating areas. The initiatives form part of the broader government strategy to revitalize rural and mountainous areas through targeted measures that improve quality of life, enhance economic activity and create conditions for the sustainable growth of villages.

Reviewing the performance of the schemes for the previous year, the Interior Minister noted that a total amount of 8.95 million euros was distributed in 2025 across both allowance categories. This funding covered 14,576 eligible households, benefiting a total of 31,975 residents in mountainous and remote areas.

Applications for the 2026 period must be submitted to local community councils between 12 June and 10 July 2026. Mr Ioannou concluded by stating that the Ministry of Interior remains dedicated to implementing policies that strengthen the growth and revival of communities while ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens.
