The Parliamentary Health Committee is to examine the medical procedure of plasmapheresis, following public discussions and reports that have emerged recently regarding its practice.
Committee opens inquiry on its own initiative
Speaking after today's session, the Chair of the Health Committee, Savia Orfanidou, said the issue was placed on the agenda by the Committee's own initiative, with the aim of focusing on the framework of control and supervisiongoverning the procedure.
According to Orfanidou, the discussion will cover, among other matters, the inspections that must be carried out at health centres and hospitals licensed to perform plasmapheresis, as well as the licensing of the healthcare professionals who carry out the procedure.
Medical equipment also under review
The medical technology equipment used in the procedure will also come under scrutiny, with the Committee examining the overall conditions and supervisory mechanisms in place.
Discussion expected in October
The discussion is expected to begin within October. According to the Committee Chair, the aim is to contribute to an ongoing process of mapping the centres where such procedures are carried out, as well as to strengthening inspections and controls.
"On behalf of the entire Health Committee, we have placed this issue on the agenda," Orfanidou said, underlining the Committee's intention to contribute constructively to the process already under way.
