The spokesman could not give a completion percentage but said fines apply if contractual obligations are not met.

The timetable for the expansion and upgrade of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Makarios Hospital in Nicosia will be met, with the building works expected to be handed over around the end of July 2027. This was the assurance given by Charalambos Charilaou, spokesman for the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO).

“The project is proceeding normally”

Speaking to CNA, Mr Charilaou said that “the project is proceeding normally” and that the planned timetable is being kept, noting that the works are progressing in line with the terms of the contract.

Asked how far the project has progressed, he said he could not say exactly what percentage had been completed, as this depends on the progress of the works and the terms of the contract.

He added, however, that if contractual obligations are not met, the contract provides for penalties, including fines.

Unit expansion “necessary”

Mr Charilaou described the expansion and upgrade of the unit as “necessary”, stressing that it will benefit patients and their families.

He said it will be a modern unit that will fully meet both Cyprus’s current and future needs. It will also give significant support to healthcare professionals and ensure a safe working environment.

Equipment and handover

On equipment for the new unit, Mr Charilaou pointed out that the building works are expected to be handed over around the end of July 2027, as previously announced. He added that “all necessary steps have been taken to secure the unit’s equipment”.

Existing unit operating normally

As for the existing unit during construction, he gave assurances that it is operating normally, without any restrictions due to the works.

He explained that external works related to the expansion are currently under way, after which the renovation workswill follow.
