Police have made two further arrests in Larnaca district in connection with an ongoing terrorism investigation, according to CNA information. The Larnaca District Court on Friday issued eight-day detention orders against the two suspects.
According to the same information, two other men, aged 32 and 38, who had been arrested earlier in May over suspected terrorism offences, appeared on Saturday before the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni. In a closed-door hearing, their detention was renewed for another eight days.
One of the suspects is reported to have admitted that “the target would have been Israelis”, while investigators are examining how and where any possible attacks may have been planned.
The two men arrested earlier, both third-country nationals, had been detained in Larnaca following the collection and assessment of information.
According to a police statement issued on May 22, searches were subsequently carried out under court warrants at two residences used by the 32-year-old in Larnaca district. Various items were found and seized, including objects that can be used to manufacture explosive substances and whose possession is prohibited.
According to information, materials used in the manufacture of explosives, including ammonium nitrate, were found at two residences in Governor’s Beach and Kamares, Larnaca, believed to be linked to the 32-year-old.
The seized items have been sent for specialised scientific examinations. Police investigations are continuing to determine whether the suspects had any other associates.
