Two of the most important new road arteries of the capital are expected to be named after two former Presidents of the Republic, in the framework of an earlier unanimous decision of the previous Strovolos Municipal Council to honour Glafcos Clerides, Tassos Papadopoulos and Dimitris Christofias.
According to information from Politis, the newly delivered Argyroupoleos Avenue, which connects Latsia with Strovolos and Lakatamia, will be renamed in the coming period to Dimitris Christofias Avenue. The relevant decision had been taken unanimously by the previous Strovolos Municipal Council under mayor Andreas Papacharalambous and concerned the honouring of three former Presidents of the Republic.
The decision has already been partially implemented, as the name of former President Glafcos Clerides has been given to the modern Strovolos Athletic Centre. At the same time, according to the same information, Alexandroupoleos Avenue will be renamed Tassos Papadopoulos Avenue once the works currently underway along the road are completed.
The case of Argyroupoleos is now considered mature for implementation, as just yesterday the new road axis was officially delivered to the public, opening the way for the implementation of the naming decision.
The benefits
The operation of the new avenue marks the end of a long period of disruption for residents, professionals and thousands of drivers who move daily in western Nicosia. Despite the significant traffic difficulties caused by the construction works, the competent authorities estimate that the new road will substantially change the map of mobility in the capital.
This is a project that remained for more than twenty years on the state’s list of development priorities. The new road axis connects the Nicosia – Limassol motorway and the Latsia area with Strovolos and Lakatamia, creating a new alternative route of approximately three kilometres from the GSP stadium to Tseriou Avenue.
Officials estimate that the new avenue will contribute decisively to the decongestion of Nicosia’s entry points, particularly during the morning peak hours. At the same time, it is considered an important complementary project to the ring road that is gradually being constructed around the capital.
Particularly significant is also expected to be the relief of Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue, one of the most congested road arteries of Nicosia, as well as the reduction of through traffic within residential areas of Latsia, Strovolos and Lakatamia.
With the implementation of the decision, two of the most important new avenues of the capital will now bear the names of former Presidents Dimitris Christofias and Tassos Papadopoulos, reflecting on the urban map of Nicosia a political decision of honorary character that was taken years ago and is now gradually entering the phase of implementation.
