Prosecution Council decision aims to trigger a criminal investigation into potential offences identified in the anti-corruption report.

The case concerning the book Mafia State and the related report of the Anti-Corruption Authority is now moving towards a criminal investigation, as the Prosecution Council of the Legal Service has decided to forward, in full, to the Police and the Council of Ministers the Report of the Independent Authority Against Corruption and the Final Report of the Inspection Officers, together with all accompanying documents and evidence.

In a statement, the Republic’s prosecutors, who are members of the Prosecution Council, said the purpose of the decision is to initiate as soon as possible the criminal investigation of possible offences by any person.

According to the statement, the two reports were delivered to the Legal Service on June 22, 2026. The Prosecution Council took its decision after taking into account, among other factors, the recusal of the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General from handling the case, the intention of the Council of Ministers to appoint independent criminal investigators, the public interest surrounding the case, and the need to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of institutions and the administration of justice.

No prior evaluation

It is noted that the reports are being forwarded without any further evaluation by the Legal Service, in order to safeguard the objectivity of the process and to allow for a comprehensive criminal investigation into all possible offences that may arise.
