Repairs to the two electricity generation units that suffered faults on Wednesday are expected to be completed later on Thursday, according to the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC).
In a statement, the operator said the two units, with a combined capacity of 165MW, are expected to return to service following repairs by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC).
"If their operation proceeds smoothly and they become available, demand is expected to be fully covered while maintaining the necessary system reserves," the statement said.
Rolling outages triggered by high demand
The TSOC said the National Energy Control Centre implemented controlled rolling power cuts across Cyprus on Wednesday due to exceptionally high temperatures, increased electricity demand and unexpected faults at conventional generating units.
The measure was necessary to balance supply and demand and safeguard the stability of the electricity system, it added.
According to the operator, power interruptions for individual consumer groups did not exceed 22 minutes.
EAC optimistic
Assistant Director of the National Energy Control Centre Haris Zavallis told CNA that the EAC has already included the two units in its generation schedule and, if all goes according to plan, they will be made available to the operator.
EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou said faults had occurred at units in both the Dhekelia and Vasilikos power stations.
She said efforts to restore the units are ongoing and expressed hope that at least one of the Dhekelia units, if not both affected units, would be back in operation today.
