A 26-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were remanded in custody for eight days on Tuesday in connection with an attempted arson attack on a forested area near Kornos, after members of the public intervened to prevent the fire from spreading.

The remand order was issued by the Larnaca District Court as police continue investigating the incident, which occurred on Sunday.

The case came to light after citizens spotted suspicious activity and managed to extinguish the blaze before it expanded.

According to police, "on Sunday evening, 2 August, at around 7pm, citizens travelling in their vehicle on a road in the Kornos area observed two individuals getting into a vehicle and leaving the area. At the same time, they noticed that a fire had broken out in a nearby forested area, which they managed to extinguish before it spread."

During the investigation, police said that "evidence was secured and, consequently, a court warrant was obtained for the arrest of a 26-year-old for the offences of conspiracy to commit a felony, attempted arson in a forest and other offences, under which he was arrested and taken into custody."

Police investigations are continuing.
