One of the appointments approved by the Council of Ministers to the new board of the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) has prompted questions over governance and potential conflicts of interest.
Among the new board members is Loizos Economides, an information technology graduate who also serves as Vice-President of PASE-ATHK, the trade union representing CYTA employees.
Conflict-of-interest concerns raised
Economides' appointment has sparked concerns about possible institutional incompatibility and conflicts of interest, given that he is a senior official of the organisation representing the authority's workforce while now also serving on CYTA's highest decision-making body.
The board is responsible for decisions relating to the organisation's strategy, administration and operations.
Critics argue that the dual role raises questions about whether a representative of the employees' union should simultaneously participate in board-level decision-making affecting the same organisation.
