The blaze burned about three hectares before crews prevented it spreading towards the village’s residential area.

A fire broke out near the community of Statos-Agios Fotios in Paphos, burning approximately three hectares of wild vegetation, vineyards and acacia trees.

The Fire Service said the swift response prevented the flames from spreading towards the community’s residential area.

Fire spotted by Civil Defence patrol

The fire was first spotted by a Civil Defence patrol, according to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis.

Four staffed Fire Service engines were deployed to the scene. They were supported by one Civil Defence vehicle, one Game and Fauna Service vehicle and five Forestry Department fire engines. The organised volunteer groups Atlas and Blue Heart also assisted.

Six firefighting aircraft joined the operation at intervals. Two were already patrolling the area, while another four helicopters and aircraft were subsequently called in.

A hired bulldozer and a water tanker were also used.

Spread towards community prevented

Kettis said the immediate intervention allowed crews to contain the fire before it could spread towards the residential area of Statos.

Water supply hoses were also destroyed in the blaze.
