The President hopes for an enlarged conference that would resume negotiations from the point where they broke off.

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday that he is optimistic about developments on the Cyprus problem, noting that the messages so far are positive. He said he had exchanged messages with the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, María Ángela Holguín, though official announcements are still awaited.

Exchange with the UN envoy

The President spoke to reporters before the inauguration of the new building of the Cyprus Confederation of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities in Nicosia. Asked whether he was optimistic, he replied:

“Yes, I am optimistic. I had an exchange of messages with Ms Holguín, but we are awaiting the official announcements. The messages are positive at this moment and I hope that, when we reach the stage of announcements, these will translate into concrete announcements,” he said.

No comment on Turkey

He was asked whether anything from the Turkish side indicated that the process was moving forward. The President said he did not wish to refer to what is happening with Turkey. He noted, however, that Ms Holguín had publicly referred to messages from the Turkish side earlier in the day.

Aim of an enlarged conference

“We are ready, I repeat, to have positive announcements that will open the way for an enlarged conference, with the aim of announcing the resumption of talks from where they were interrupted,” the President concluded.
