Fatal workplace accidents in Cyprus fell to five in 2024, from 14 in 2023 and 9 in 2022, according to Eurostat data published on Friday. At European Union level, however, an increase of 1.4% was recorded, with fatal accidents reaching 3,367.
Cyprus also recorded 1,320 non-fatal workplace accidents in 2024, compared with 1,314 in 2023 and 1,326 in 2022.
Across the EU, the 3,367 fatal workplace accidents recorded in 2024 represented an increase of 45 incidents, or 1.4%, compared with the previous year.
By contrast, non-fatal workplace accidents in the EU totalled 2.78 million, down by 1.5%. This decrease corresponds to 43,742 fewer incidents than in 2023.
By economic sector, construction recorded the highest number of fatal workplace accidents in the EU in 2024, with 776 incidents. This was down from 802 incidents in 2023, which was the sector’s highest figure over the past decade.
Transport and storage followed, with 537 fatal workplace accidents, while manufacturing recorded 466.
Manufacturing recorded the highest number of non-fatal workplace accidents, with 509,851 incidents in 2024. According to Eurostat, this was the lowest figure recorded in the sector over the past decade, with the exception of 2020, when incidents fell to 498,060 during the pandemic.
Construction ranked second, with 352,520 non-fatal workplace accidents, followed by wholesale and retail trade and the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, with 345,282 incidents.
The figures come from the European statistics collection on workplace accidents, published by Eurostat on Friday, presenting data for 2024 and comparisons with previous years.
