The Department of Agriculture has submitted two applications to the European Commission seeking Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status for “Athienitiko Psomi” and “Athienitiko Loukoumi”.
The applications were forwarded to the European Commission for examination on 25 September 2026, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.
Applications approved at national level
The two applications were first examined at national level and subsequently approved by the Director of the Department of Agriculture.
The relevant notification was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus on 25 September, together with the specifications for both products.
The Ministry described Athienitiko Psomi and Athienitiko Loukoumi as two Cypriot gastronomic products of “exceptional quality” and considerable reputation.
Decision expected in 2027
The applications will now be examined by the European Commission as part of the process for registration as Protected Geographical Indications.
The Agriculture Ministry said it expects the applications to receive a favourable decision during 2027.
