Police in Nicosia are investigating a new online fraud case involving a fake message about an allegedly unpaid fine, after a 52-year-old man was charged €2,326 through a fraudulent website.
According to the complaint, the man followed an electronic link contained in the message and was directed to a fake website impersonating Cyprus Police.
Believing he was paying the purported fine, he entered his bank card details on the website. His card was subsequently charged €2,326.
The case is being investigated by the Financial Crime Investigation Unit of Nicosia CID.
Police warn public over suspicious links
Following the incident, Police urged members of the public to be particularly cautious of messages containing electronic links.
Police stressed that they do not contact members of the public through messages or other platforms requesting payment of fines.
People are advised not to:
- Follow unknown or suspicious links.
- Enter personal or banking details on unfamiliar websites.
- Assume a message is genuine simply because it claims to come from an official authority.
Anyone wishing to verify a message should contact the organisation mentioned directly through its official communication channels, rather than using contact information or links contained in the suspicious message.
