Justice Minister Fytiris Hears Marathasa Communities’ Policing and Fire Concerns

Community leaders sought stronger policing and fire cover, as alternative sites for a Pedoulas station are examined.

Community leaders from the Marathasa area have called for a stronger police presence and more effective fire-service coverage for their villages, during a visit by Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fytiris. The meeting formed part of a tour of the Morphou area that also took in the local police directorate and the site of a planned heliport at Linou.

According to a ministry announcement, the visit was part of direct communication with local authorities and an on-site briefing on security and operational readiness.

Concerns raised by Marathasa communities

At the meeting with community leaders, the problems and particular needs of mountain communities were discussed. According to the announcement, the community leaders raised the need for a stronger police presence and community policing, as well as more effective fire-service coverage.

Pedoulas fire station

Particular reference was made to the creation of a fire station in Pedoulas. The discussion focused on examining alternative locations beyond the plot initially proposed, in order to explore ways of advancing the project.

Briefing at the Morphou Police Directorate

Mr Fytiris also visited the Morphou Police Directorate, where he met local police leadership. He was briefed on the directorate’s operations, its operational needs and the challenges faced by its staff in carrying out their duties.

He also heard the leadership’s concerns and suggestions, with emphasis on effective policing and covering remote communities.

The minister stressed the importance of close cooperation between the competent services and local authorities, with the aim of responding effectively to citizens’ needs and enhancing security in the area.

Linou heliport

Mr Fytiris concluded his visit at the site in Linou where a heliport is planned. The project is included in the Government Programme.

He was briefed on the progress of preliminary work to prepare and level the site, which is under way.
