The trial of Paphos Mayor Phaedon Phaedonos, who is currently suspended from his duties, continued today behind closed doors with the cross-examination of the complainant by defence lawyers Christos Pourgourides and Nondas Korakidis.
Court set the next hearing for Thursday, 22 October, at 9.00 a.m.
At the two previous hearings, the complainant testified for several hours while the suspended mayor was in an adjoining room.
Wrapping up the case
According to sources, the trial is expected to conclude before the end of 2026.
After the prosecution witnesses have completed their testimony, the court will decide whether the prosecution has established a prima facie case. If it finds that it has, the defence lawyers are expected to call defence witnesses.
A witness who had been expected to testify at previous hearings will not do so after all, as he is in hospital following health problems. The President of the criminal court is expected to consider whether this prosecution witness, who has a serious health problem, will testify at the place where he is being treated.
Phaedon Phaedonos faces five charges: rape, indecent assault against a woman, indecent assault against a woman by another act, assault causing actual bodily harm, and administering a drug or other substance capable of rendering a person unconscious or overcoming their power of resistance. He has pleaded not guilty to all five charges.
