A 36-year-old groom and his 28-year-old best man have been remanded in custody for two days by the Limassol District Court in connection with an alleged dangerous driving incident at the Linopetra roundabout on 31 October.
The pair are being investigated for a number of offences, including:
- Dangerous driving
- Blocking a public road without a permit
- Public nuisance
- Obstructing traffic
Alleged drift display after wedding
According to evidence presented by police, the incident took place after the wedding ceremony and before the reception, when the groom and several friends allegedly decided to stage a drift demonstration at the roundabout.
Police told the court that the groom admitted transporting a racing vehicle to the location on a trailer and using the trailer to block one of the entrances to the roundabout.
Other entrances and exits were allegedly blocked by additional vehicles.
Investigators claim the groom then invited his best man to drive the car.
According to police, the best man carried out dangerous manoeuvres and drifting for approximately five minutes, with the vehicle at times travelling against the normal direction of traffic and circling around a young pedestrian standing on the roadway.
Police searching for vehicle
A key element of the investigation concerns the vehicle itself.
Police told the court that the groom delivered a car shell to the Limassol Traffic Department on Monday, but investigators believe it was not the vehicle shown in the videos of the incident.
According to police, the vehicle presented was missing its engine, gearbox, seats, steering wheel and other essential components and carried different markings from the car seen in the footage.
Investigators described it as little more than the vehicle's frame and believe the car allegedly used in the incident remains elsewhere.
Further inquiries continue
Police are continuing their investigation and are seeking two tow-truck drivers who are alleged to have assisted in blocking the road.
Statements are also expected to be taken from relatives and friends of the suspects, while CCTV footage from the area is being examined.
