The House of Representatives approved the extension on Thursday after most parties requested a longer window than the government had initially proposed, allowing for a review when parliament returns in the autumn.

The reduced excise duty on motor fuels will remain in place until 17 September 2026, saving consumers an estimated €15.5 million, the Ministry of Finance announced. The House of Representatives approved the extension on Thursday.

The measure had originally been extended by the Council of Ministers at its session on 24 June 2026 until 31 August 2026. Following a request from most parliamentary parties at the House of Representatives session on 25 June, the Ministry of Finance agreed to a further extension to 17 September, allowing time for the measure to be reviewed at the start of the autumn parliamentary session.

Under the arrangement, the tax relief of 8.33 cents per litre, including VAT, is maintained at current levels. The excise duty on petrol remains reduced from €0.429 to €0.359 per litre, and the excise duty on diesel remains reduced from €0.40 to €0.33 per litre.

The Ministry of Finance said that while international fuel prices and retail prices show a downward trend, they have not yet stabilised. It also noted that Cyprus continues to have among the lowest fuel prices in the EU for both petrol and diesel.
