The OUXEKA-SEK and SYXKA-PEO trade unions have sent letters to Labour and Social Insurance Minister Marinos Mousiouttas, Labour Relations Department Director Antis Apostolou and Labour Department Director Alexandros Alexandrou raising concerns over the growing use of temporary agency workers in the hotel industry.
According to a SEK statement, the unions say there has been a significant increase in the number of temporary agency, or "rented", workers employed in hotels and leisure centres.
They argue that the practice raises serious concerns because it allegedly breaches provisions of the Temporary Agency Work Law of 2012, undermines collective agreements and other labour legislation, and compounds problems linked to the implementation of the new framework governing the employment of third-country nationals.
The unions also refer to a letter sent on 17 June 2025 by the director of the Department of Labour Relations to hotel associations outlining the requirements of the legislation and employers' obligations.
Despite that guidance, they say the practice has not only continued but appears to be increasing.
OUXEKA-SEK and SYXKA-PEO are calling on the Ministry's competent services to carry out immediate inspections and checks within the affected sectors to ensure full compliance with the law, end unlawful practices and safeguard workers' rights.
