The picture on Cyprus's electricity system looks good for Friday, with demand expected to be fully covered while maintaining the necessary reserves, Haris Zavallis, assistant director of the National Energy Control Centre at the Transmission System Operator (TSO), told CNA.
Zavallis said available conventional generation capacity stood at 1,188 megawatts on Friday morning, and is expected to rise to 1,248 megawatts later in the day once a 60-megawatt unit at the Dhekelia power station is brought back online. He said that unit, which had only returned to service earlier on Thursday, went offline again on Thursday evening after developing a fault that the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is now investigating.
For Friday, Zavallis said midday peak demand, between 2pm and 4pm, is estimated at 1,320 megawatts, while the evening peak, between 7pm and 9.30pm, is forecast to reach around 1,065 megawatts.
"Regardless of the availability of the Dhekelia unit, today's demand is expected to be covered, with reserves in the system," Zavallis said.
