Finance Minister Makis Keravnos said safeguarding the long-term sustainability of the Social Insurance Fund remains at the centre of the government's pension reform plans.

Finance Minister Makis Keravnos said the government remains focused on ensuring the sustainability of the Social Insurance Fund (SIF) as part of the pension reform currently under discussion.

Speaking after a meeting of the Labour Advisory Body, Keravnos said his participation was particularly important because discussions centred on the economic aspects of the planned reform.

He said the primary objective is to proceed with reforms to the first pension pillar, including increases in pensions for low-income pensioners.

Keravnos stressed that any reform must be compatible with maintaining fiscal stability and balanced public finances, both now and in the future.

"It is important that this reform includes safeguards for times of crisis," he said, adding that policymakers must look beyond immediate needs and consider the long-term implications of the changes.

The minister noted that a number of questions and issues had emerged during discussions and said these would be examined further in the coming days.
