The initiative, which has recently begun on a trial basis, offers ready-made breakfast meals to pupils in public kindergartens in the two districts. Around 2,600 children in Larnaca and 1,000 in Famagusta are currently benefiting from the programme.
According to the ministry, the pilot scheme is being implemented following a decision by the Council of Ministers and forms part of the government’s programme for 2026, as announced by the President of the Republic.
“The preparation and provision of ready-made breakfast is an innovative social initiative aimed at promoting healthy nutrition and development among young pupils, while at the same time offering practical support to their families,” the ministry said.
The meals are based on healthy options developed by education and health specialists within the ministry, in collaboration with Cypriot volunteer clinical dietitians. The aim is to meet children’s nutritional needs in line with guidance reflected in World Health Organization reports.
“Starting from the most important meal of the day, children are offered a better future, with dignity and prospects, ensuring equal access not only to education but also to nutrition,” the announcement added.
The contractor responsible for implementing the programme was selected through an open tender process.
The total cost of the pilot phase is estimated at around €1.5 million and is being covered through a donation from Allwyn (OPAP Cyprus). The Stelios Philanthropic Foundation is also expected to support the initiative from September by providing selected food items.
As part of the pilot, authorities will collect and evaluate data on the quality, quantity, nutritional value and acceptance of the meals by children, with the aim of addressing any issues that arise.
The ministry said it will also establish a communication channel between parents, educators and relevant authorities to ensure rapid intervention where needed and the effective rollout of what it described as an ‘ambitious’ programme.
