Iran Accuses IAEA of Politicising Oversight of Nuclear Programme

Iran has accused the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of politicising its oversight of the country’s nuclear programme, criticising both the agency and its director-general Rafael Grossi.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the agency is turning technical monitoring into a political process, accusing Mr Grossi of ignoring US and Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.

“Mr Grossi speaks of ‘ambiguity’, ‘lack of access’ and ‘loss of continuity of knowledge,’ but this situation did not arise without cause,” Mr Gharibabadi wrote. “Nuclear facilities under safeguards were targeted by military attacks from the United States and the Israeli regime. The director-general never condemned these attacks.”

Mr Gharibabadi added that Mr Grossi is “fully aligned with the United States and the West” and questioned how a person with “this political approach and dependency” could lead the agency independently. He also noted that Mr Grossi is a candidate for the position of UN secretary-general.

He rejected repeated references to Iran enriching uranium to 60%, arguing that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons does not set a specific upper limit on enrichment.

“The legal criterion is the absence of diversion of nuclear material for military purposes,” he said.

According to Mr Gharibabadi, if the agency seeks a diplomatic solution, it must stop turning technical reports into instruments of political pressure.

“One cannot bomb facilities under safeguards, eliminate the necessary access for inspections, and then use the consequences of those attacks as ‘ambiguity’ against Iran,” he added.
