The Cyprus delegation of the Cyprus Special Olympics Federation is departing for Malta to compete in the Special Olympics European Swimming Games, which will take place from 10 to 14 September 2026.
The event marks a significant international swimming competition for the Special Olympics movement and is being staged at this level for the first time, bringing together hundreds of athletes from across Europe and beyond.
Malta to host inaugural competition
The organisers have adopted the theme "Beyond the Wave", highlighting the role of sport in creating opportunities, bringing people together and promoting a more inclusive society.
The competition is expected to attract participants from numerous countries, providing athletes with an opportunity to compete on an international stage and foster cross-border connections through sport.

Cyprus will be represented by a six-member delegation comprising two male athletes, two female athletes and two coaches.
According to the federation, the athletes have completed their preparations and are ready to participate in the competition, aiming to perform to the best of their abilities while gaining valuable experience from the international event.
Spirit of the Special Olympics
The federation said the Special Olympics movement gives athletes the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities, overcome personal challenges and experience the value of participation and competition.
It added that the event reflects the principles of inclusion and equal opportunity that underpin the Special Olympics programme.
The Cyprus delegation travels to Malta with hopes of a successful participation at the European Games.
