RAF crews at Akrotiri say they are fully prepared to assist Cyprus during the wildfire season following joint training with national forces.

Firefighting helicopter crews from the British Bases have confirmed they are ready to provide support during the summer wildfire season, following the recent “Iphestos” exercise coordinated by the Republic of Cyprus.

The Chinook crews from RAF Akrotiri’s 1310 Flight completed their training on 1 May and have already applied their skills during last week’s joint exercise alongside Cypriot forces.

Speaking after the exercise, 1310 Flight commander Squadron Leader Joel Babbage highlighted the importance of joint operational readiness.

“The exercise proved to be an extremely valuable training activity, particularly in strengthening interoperability with Republic of Cyprus assets,” he said.

“It provided a realistic environment for integrating procedures, communications and tactical coordination with partner forces.”

He added that cooperation with Cypriot units improved understanding of operational capabilities and methods, enabling more effective joint planning and execution.

Ahead of the fire season, the British Bases will maintain a Chinook helicopter on constant standby for immediate deployment.

Babbage said the aircraft is well suited for aerial firefighting operations.

“The Chinook is ideally suited for firefighting, as it is one of the most capable heavy‑lift helicopters in the world.

“Its strong performance allows it to operate effectively in demanding conditions, including high temperatures and difficult terrain, while carrying substantial loads.

“The crews are highly trained and bring extensive operational experience, using skills developed in their primary support role, including precision flying, load management and situational awareness.

“These combined capabilities make the Chinook a reliable and highly effective platform for aerial firefighting.”
