Unsettled conditions are expected from Sunday to Wednesday, before temperatures possibly climb again next weekend.

Unsettled weather is expected to affect Cyprus from Sunday, bringing local rain and possible storms mainly to mountain areas and inland parts of the island, while temperatures are forecast to drop by around three degrees.

Senior meteorological officer Michalis Mouskos, speaking to Politis 107.6 & 97.6, said Saturday is expected to remain generally fine, although increased humidity and light mist may be observed in some coastal and eastern areas during the morning. These conditions are expected to be localised and short-lived.

From Sunday, however, the weather pattern is forecast to change as instability affects the region. Mouskos said local showers and possible storms are expected during the midday and early afternoon hours, mainly over the mountains and inland areas.

Rain may also affect parts of the Karpasia peninsula, while conditions along most other coastal areas are expected to remain fine.

“On the coasts, people will not notice anything. The weather there will be very good,” he said.

Temperatures today and on Saturday are expected to remain close to seasonal norms. Inland areas are forecast to reach around 37 to 38C, coastal areas between 30 and 32C, and the higher mountains around 18C.

Northern coastal areas are expected to be warmer, with temperatures reaching 36C on Saturday.

A drop of around three degrees is expected on Sunday. Mouskos said inland temperatures are forecast to fall from around 38C on Saturday to 35C on Sunday, slightly below average for the period. Similar conditions are expected to continue until Wednesday.

After Wednesday, temperatures are expected to return closer to seasonal averages.

Mouskos said the situation may change again next weekend, when higher pressure is expected to affect the region.

“We may go beyond 40C, possibly reaching around 41C by Saturday,” he said, while stressing that it is still too early for a firm forecast.

He added that the hottest part of the summer in Cyprus usually begins after July 10 and lasts until mid-August.

For now, however, no prolonged period of particularly high temperatures is expected.
