Cyprus is set for another scorching day on Thursday, with temperatures expected to reach 40C inland and a yellow heat warning in effect during the afternoon.
According to the Meteorological Department, the warning will be in force from 2pm until 4.30pm, when maximum temperatures inland are forecast to peak at around 40C.
Isolated mountain showers possible
The day will begin mostly fine, although patches of fog and low cloud are expected along southern coastal areas during the morning before quickly clearing.
As the day progresses, increased cloud cover is expected to develop, with isolated showers possible over the mountains during the afternoon.
Winds will be mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, initially light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, strengthening along coastal areas to 4 to 5 Beaufort later in the day.
The sea will be generally calm to slightly rough.
Temperatures are expected to reach:
- 40C inland
- 34C along most coastal areas
- 32C on western and south-western coasts
- 30C in the higher mountains
Warm night ahead
Conditions will remain mostly clear overnight, although increased low cloud is expected later, particularly along southern and eastern coastal areas.
Temperatures will fall to around:
- 23C inland and along the coast
- 20C in the higher mountains
Weekend outlook
Friday is expected to remain mostly fine, with increased cloud over mountainous areas during the afternoon bringing a chance of isolated showers.
Similar conditions are forecast for Saturday and Sunday, with mainly sunny weather across most areas but the possibility of isolated showers or thunderstorms developing over the mountains later in the day.
Temperatures are expected to remain above seasonal averages through the weekend.
