The Meteorological Service has issued a yellow warning for extreme maximum temperatures, with the mercury expected to reach around 40C inland.
The warning will be in effect on Friday, 17 July, from 2pm until 4.30pm.
Forecast
A seasonal low-pressure system is affecting the region.
Friday will be mainly fine, although increasing cloud is expected to develop during the day. In mountainous areas, afternoon cloud may produce isolated showers.
Winds will initially be light and variable at around 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly southwesterly to northwesterly at 3 to 4 Beaufort, strengthening along the coast to 4 to 5 Beaufort during the afternoon.
The sea will be generally calm to slightly rough.
Temperatures are forecast to reach:
- 40C inland
- 32C on western and southwestern coasts
- 34C along the remaining coastal areas
- 29C in the higher mountains
Outlook
Tonight will remain mostly clear, with increased low cloud developing later, particularly along the coast. Patchy mist or fog may form in some southern and eastern areas during the early morning hours.
Temperatures overnight are expected to fall to:
- 24C inland and on the coast
- 20C in the higher mountains
On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, conditions will remain mostly fine across most of the island, although afternoon cloud over mountainous areas may trigger isolated showers or thunderstorms.
Temperatures are not expected to change significantly through Monday and will remain above seasonal averages.
