The Fire Service has issued an urgent appeal for the public to exercise extreme caution amid conditions that significantly increase the risk of wildfires and their rapid spread.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the service urged anyone who notices smoke, fire or any activity that could potentially cause a wildfire to immediately contact the authorities.
Residents are asked to call:
- 112 (Fire Service emergency line)
- 1407 (Department of Forests)
The public is also encouraged to report any suspicious activity or behaviour that may be linked to the outbreak of a fire.
Strict ban on lighting fires
The Fire Service reiterated that lighting fires in forests or rural areas for any reason is strictly prohibited.
Special caution is advised when using tools and agricultural machinery capable of generating sparks, heat or flames, including:
- Grinders;
- Oxy-acetylene equipment;
- Welding equipment.
Authorities also warned that discarded cigarette butts and open flames can easily trigger fires, with potentially devastating consequences for the environment, property and human life.
“The cooperation and responsibility of everyone are essential in preventing unfortunate developments,” the Fire Service said.
