A large wildfire between Lympia and Koshi in Larnaca district was contained on Friday afternoon following an extensive operation involving ground crews and seven aircraft. Authorities are investigating the possibility of arson after three separate ignition points were identified near the Koshi-Athienou road.
The blaze affected approximately 25 hectares of stubble and wild vegetation.
Large-scale firefighting operation
The Fire Service deployed five fire engines and 17 personnel in support of the Forestry Department, which had operational responsibility for tackling the blaze.
The Forestry Department contributed a further 10 fire engines, a tracked vehicle and agricultural tractors, which were used to create firebreaks and prevent the flames from spreading.
Seven aircraft deployed
Seven aircraft and helicopters carried out continuous water drops over the affected area, playing a key role in bringing the fire under control.
The Ikaros emergency response plan was also activated as part of the operation.
Three ignition points investigated
Authorities are examining the circumstances in which the fire began, including the possibility of a deliberate act.
According to available information, three separate ignition points were identified near the Koshi-Athienou road. The finding is being assessed as part of the ongoing investigation.
National Guard outpost evacuated
A National Guard outpost near the fire was evacuated as a precaution because of its proximity to the flames.
The personnel were not in immediate danger, and the evacuation was carried out solely for safety reasons.
