The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for extreme high temperatures for Friday, 7 August.
The warning will be in effect from 1pm to 3pm, with temperatures expected to reach around 40C in inland areas.
Forecast
A seasonal low-pressure system is affecting the region.
Today will be mostly clear, although increased cloud cover is expected around midday and early afternoon. Isolated showers are possible in mountainous areas.
Winds will initially be southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, becoming locally strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort later in the day.
The sea will be slight to a little rough.
Temperatures are expected to reach:
- 40C inland
- 31C on the southwest and west coasts
- 34C along the remaining coastal areas
- 30C in the higher mountains
Tonight
Conditions will remain mostly clear, although periods of increased low cloud are expected.
Later tonight and during the early morning hours, patchy mist or fog may form, mainly in eastern areas and inland.
Winds will be northwesterly to northeasterly, light and occasionally moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort.
Temperatures will fall to:
- 22C inland
- 23C on the coast
- 18C in the higher mountains
Weekend outlook
Saturday, Sunday and Monday are expected to remain mostly clear.
No significant change in temperature is forecast, with values remaining above average for the season.
