The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for extreme maximum temperatures, with the mercury expected to climb to around 41°C inland on Friday.
According to the warning, numbered 55 and issued at 4pm on Thursday 20 August, the risk level is yellow. The warning will be in effect from 1pm to 4pm on Friday 21 August 2026.
The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 41°C inland, while in the higher mountain areas it is expected to reach around 32°C.
Forecast
A relatively warm air mass is expected from tomorrow.
Tonight, the weather will be mostly clear. In the early morning hours, locally increased low cloud is expected in eastern coastal areas. Winds will initially blow westerly to northwesterly, light and locally moderate, at three to four on the Beaufort scale, becoming mainly light offshore winds later, up to three Beaufort. The sea will be slight. Temperatures will fall to around 23°C inland, in the north and on the eastern coast, around 24°C on the remaining coasts, and around 19°C in the higher mountain areas.
Tomorrow, the weather will be mostly clear. Winds in the morning will be variable and light, up to three Beaufort, becoming mainly southwesterly to northwesterly later, light to moderate, three to four Beaufort, and locally strong at five Beaufort on the southwestern coasts. The sea will be calm to slight in the morning, but slight on windward coasts in the afternoon. Temperatures will rise to around 41°C inland, around 33°C on the western coast, around 36°C on the remaining coasts, and around 32°C in the higher mountain areas.
Tomorrow night, the weather will be mostly clear. Winds will blow mainly westerly to northwesterly, initially light and locally moderate at three to four Beaufort, becoming light later, up to three Beaufort. The sea will become calm to slight on leeward coasts, remaining slight on windward coasts.
On Saturday, the weather will be mostly clear.
On Sunday and Monday, the weather will remain mostly clear, although locally increased cloud will be observed in the afternoons, mainly over the mountains. Late at night and in the early morning, local low cloud and patchy fog are expected, mainly in the eastern half of the island.
Temperatures will fall slightly on Saturday, remaining at similar levels until Monday, when they will be a little above the seasonal average.
