Heat Warning Issued as Temperatures Hit 40C

A yellow heat warning is in effect for inland areas today, while isolated showers are possible in the mountains ahead of a cooler, wetter weekend.

The warning applies from 1pm to 4pm, with particularly hot conditions forecast for inland parts of Cyprus.

At the same time, isolated showers are possible after midday, mainly over mountainous and inland areas. A more significant change in the weather is expected from Saturday, bringing local showers, isolated thunderstorms and a noticeable drop in temperatures.

Forecast

A seasonal low-pressure system is affecting the region, while a disturbance moving south from northern areas is expected to influence the island on Saturday.

Today

After the dissipation of early low cloud and patchy mist or fog, conditions will become mostly fine.

During the afternoon, cloud development is expected to bring isolated showers, mainly over mountainous areas and parts of the interior.

Winds will initially be light and variable at around 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly southwesterly to northwesterly at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and locally 4 to 5 Beaufort along southern coastal areas in the afternoon.

The sea will be calm to slightly rough.

Maximum temperatures are expected to reach:

  • 40C inland
  • 32C on western coasts
  • 34C on other coastal areas
  • 30C in the higher mountains

Tonight

Conditions will remain mostly clear, although periods of increased low cloud are expected, particularly along coastal areas.

Later and during the early morning hours, patchy mist or fog may form, mainly in southeastern districts and inland areas.

Temperatures will fall to around:

  • 21C inland
  • 23C on the coasts
  • 20C in the higher mountains

Friday

Mostly fine weather is expected, although increased cloud over mountainous areas during the afternoon may produce isolated showers.

Saturday

The weather will become mostly cloudy, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected.

The forecast warns that some of the weather phenomena could be locally intense or prolonged.

Sunday

Conditions will initially be mostly fine, but increased cloud during the afternoon is expected to produce isolated showers, mainly over mountainous areas, inland districts and southern parts of the island.

Temperature trend

Temperatures on Friday are expected to remain largely unchanged and above seasonal averages.

A marked drop is forecast for Saturday, bringing temperatures below normal for the time of year.

A slight increase is expected again on Sunday.
