An unusually wet end to the month pushed average rainfall across Cyprus to 30 millimetres, compared with a monthly norm of just 2.9 millimetres. Preliminary data from the Department of Meteorology show that 22.5 millimetres fell during the final three days alone.
Rainfall reached 1,034% of normal
According to figures recorded in the government-controlled areas up to the morning of Monday, August 31, rainfall reached 1,034% of the normal level for the month.
Platania recorded the highest total, with 83.9 millimetres, compared with a monthly average of 12.8 millimetres. This was equivalent to 655% of the normal level.
Frenaros and Xylotymbou see sharpest increases
The largest percentage differences were recorded in Frenaros and Xylotymbou, where rainfall reached at least 200 times the monthly norm.
Frenaros received 27.3 millimetres, compared with a normal 0.1 millimetres, or 27,300% of the average. Xylotymbou recorded 40 millimetres, compared with a normal 0.2 millimetres, reaching 20,000%.
Rainfall at Larnaca Airport was more than 40 times the monthly average, at 26.2 millimetres compared with 0.6 millimetres. Panagia Bridge received 43.4 millimetres, almost 30 times its monthly norm of 1.5 millimetres.
Nearly all stations exceeded monthly averages
No rainfall was recorded in Pano Panagia, while Paphos Airport received 0.2 millimetres, matching its monthly average. All other Department of Meteorology stations recorded rainfall well above normal levels.
Between October 1, 2025, and the end of August 2026, total rainfall reached 608.3 millimetres, equivalent to 122% of the average for the period. Every monitoring station across Cyprus exceeded 100% of its normal level.
