Party leader Nikos Anastasios and General Secretary Lefteris Georgiou have resigned following EDEK’s failure to secure parliamentary representation, leaving the party in turmoil.

EDEK has entered a critical phase of internal crisis following its failure to secure representation in the House of Representatives, with senior figures submitting their resignations during a meeting of the party’s Central Committee.

The session, convened to assess the election result and determine the party’s next steps after its exclusion from parliament, saw significant developments in the leadership structure.

According to information, party leader Nikos Anastasios announced his resignation during his address to the Central Committee. A final decision on whether his resignation will be accepted is expected after the completion of internal discussions and interventions by committee members.

The party’s General Secretary of the Central Committee, Lefteris Georgiou, also submitted his resignation.

Profound uncertainty

The developments place EDEK in a period of profound uncertainty as it attempts to regroup following a significant electoral setback.

The Central Committee is expected to continue deliberations on both the election outcome and the future direction of the movement, including potential leadership changes and organisational restructuring.

The resignations of the party leader and general secretary mark one of the most serious internal disruptions in recent years for EDEK, which now faces the challenge of redefining its role in Cyprus’ political landscape after losing its parliamentary presence.

Further decisions are expected once internal consultations are completed.
