DIKO MP Chrysis Pantelides has criticised Fidias Panayiotou over the language he used to describe behind-the-scenes consultations ahead of Annita Demetriou’s election as Speaker of the House.
In a post on social media, Pantelides said the language used by the MEP and president of Direct Democracy was “unacceptable, to say the least”.
“He must show respect, not only towards those he refers to, but also towards the society listening to him,” Pantelides said.
His intervention came after Panayiotou released a video in which he referred to contacts held by Direct Democracy with political parties before the election of the House Speaker.
In the video, Panayiotou claimed that his party’s discussions with DIKO’s leadership had pressured DISY into accepting all the proposals put forward, amid concerns that it could lose the House presidency.
The comments prompted political reaction, with Pantelides focusing on the tone and vocabulary used by Panayiotou when describing the political consultations.
