PASYEK-PEO says recent strike marks the start of a broader campaign over workers' rights and living standards.

The executive board of PASYEK-PEO has warned that the recent 24-hour nationwide strike by hourly paid government employees was "only the beginning", urging the government to initiate dialogue within days or face further industrial action.

In a statement, the union said its executive board met on Friday to review the organisation's performance during the first half of 2026 and assess progress towards its strategic objectives.

The board also discussed the current labour and socio-economic situation and reviewed the outcome of the recent 24-hour nationwide strike involving hourly paid government employees.

Continuation of DISY

Among other points, the statement accused the Christodoulides administration of effectively continuing the policies of the previous decade of DISY government, alleging that it had "completely ignored the needs of workers, young people and society as a whole".

Addressing the government, PASYEK-PEO said the time it had allowed as a final effort to break the deadlock through dialogue was running out.

"We expect the President of the Republic and the government to take initiatives within the next few days to resume dialogue, making it possible to begin a meaningful process with a clear timetable that leads to positive outcomes for workers, their incomes and their standard of living," the union said.

"If no such initiatives are forthcoming, workers' reaction should be considered inevitable," it added.
