The Attorney General’s Office has issued clarifications following an announcement by the Independent Authority Against Corruption concerning the “black van” case.
According to the Legal Service, the Authority sent a classified letter to the Attorney General on 16 July 2026, informing him of its intention to investigate specific aspects of the case and asking whether any legal obstacle prevented it from doing so.
The Legal Service stressed that the matters outlined in the letter did not concern its handling of the case.
Previous investigations
On 30 July 2026, the Attorney General replied that all the matters identified by the Authority had already been investigated by both the police and an independent criminal investigator.
He also informed the Authority of the findings of those investigations and the progress of the case through the courts.
Based on that information and the provisions of Section 10 of Law 19(I)/2022, which prohibits multiple investigations into the same corruption case, the Independent Authority Against Corruption decided to terminate its investigation into the “black van”.
The Authority notified the Attorney General of its decision in a letter dated 8 September 2026.
Classified correspondence
The Attorney General also addressed the Authority’s criticism regarding the classification of their correspondence.
He said this was considered necessary because the correspondence contained confidential information and because the Authority itself had classified its initial letter.
The Legal Service issued its statement in response to an announcement published by the Independent Authority Against Corruption on 14 September concerning its actions in relation to the “black van” investigation.
