Loukas Fourlas has ruled out seeking the DISY nomination for the 2028 presidential election, while expressing concern about recent developments within the party and the decision to proceed with an internal electoral contest.
In a written statement, the DISY MEP said that following Annita Demetriou's decision to withdraw from the race, party officials and members had encouraged him to consider a candidacy of his own.
While thanking those who approached him, Fourlas said their confidence reflected recognition of a political career built on work and public service rather than personal ambition.
However, he made clear that he has no interest in pursuing the party's presidential nomination.
"I was never interested in seeking any high office."
Fourlas said he intends to continue serving citizens from his position as a Member of the European Parliament, to which he has been elected twice.
Concern over party direction
Referring to the ongoing internal debate within DISY, Fourlas said recent events have created an "unpleasant image" for the party and have generated new challenges requiring seriousness, responsibility and a clear political message.
He did not hide his concern about the situation, expressing disappointment that his proposal to avoid an internal election for the 2028 nomination was not adopted.
According to Fourlas, the priority should have been dialogue, consensus-building and the search for a broadly acceptable candidate capable of uniting the party and strengthening its chances of electoral success.
'DISY comes before individual ambitions'
The MEP stressed that DISY has a long political history, deep social roots and significant responsibilities, particularly regarding the Cyprus issue and the party's role in the country's social and economic life.
He argued that the party has a duty to meet the expectations of supporters and warned that internal decisions should not undermine its future prospects.
"We have no right to disappoint the expectations of DISY members and the people who look to us, nor to allow our choices to undermine the party's prospects."
Concluding his statement, Fourlas delivered a message directed at the party's leadership and members.
"Above individuals, ambitions and internal party procedures stands the Democratic Rally."
"And above all stands Cyprus."
