The race for the Democratic Rally (DISY) nomination for the 2028 presidential election entered a decisive phase on Monday, with the party opening the formal nomination process at its headquarters on Pindarou Street in Nicosia.
Attention is focused on the two contenders, Averof Neophytou and George Pamboridis, who are expected to formally lodge their candidacies ahead of the party election scheduled for 28 November.
Neophytou seeks political comeback
Neophytou enters the contest drawing on his years at the helm of DISY, extensive knowledge of the party apparatus and longstanding relationships with party officials across Cyprus.
His campaign has highlighted its organisational strength by submitting more than 3,000 signatures of support, well above the 500 required to secure nomination.
For the former DISY president, the contest also represents an opportunity to return to centre stage politically following his defeat in the 2023 presidential election and the internal upheaval that followed within the party.
A key question is whether the influence he retains within the party structure can translate into majority support among members participating in the vote.
Pamboridis pushes renewal message
Pamboridis is presenting a different vision, centred on political renewal and a redefinition of DISY's identity.
The former health minister and Nicosia MP brings government experience to the race but lacks the same organisational pedigree and party-machine connections as his opponent.
As a result, his campaign is expected to rely heavily on mobilising supporters beyond DISY's traditional internal networks.
November showdown
The submission of nominations formally launches the internal campaign that will culminate in the 28 November vote, when DISY members will choose the party's candidate for the next presidential election.
The outcome is widely viewed as a pivotal moment for the party as it seeks to define its direction following the divisions that emerged after the 2023 presidential contest.
