The United Nations has announced that a trilateral meeting between the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, and the leaders of the two communities will take place on the morning of 9 November.
According to a statement by the United Nations in Cyprus, on Monday, 9 November 2026, at 11 a.m., Ms Holguín will receive Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides at the residence of the Head of Mission, within the United Nations Protected Area.
Earlier, the President of the Republic said he had spoken by telephone with Ms Holguín on Thursday morning. He said that “we are in a process which, based on the information available so far, appears to point to positive developments”. He added that the process was at the stage of waiting for final answers and that, as the Personal Envoy had told him, specific announcements might be made over the weekend.
Hopes for positive development
The President also said that the UN Secretary-General was being kept constantly informed and expressed his sincere hope that positive developments would be announced, as the situation appeared to indicate and as he was being briefed by the Personal Envoy.
Asked whether developments were expected on the crossing points, he recalled that the effort, which began immediately after the UN Secretary-General’s visit to Cyprus, concerned matters of methodology, substance and confidence-building measures. “The discussion is broader,” he noted.
“The anxiety and the desire of the Cypriot people are entirely justified,” he said, adding that he was working in this direction and continually submitting proposals and approaches. He said he genuinely believed that, if there was political will, these could lead to the resumption of talks.
