Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has sought to play down tensions between Athens and Ankara over the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnector, insisting that the situation is normal amid a dispute involving competing NAVTEX notices for cable survey operations.
Asked about the latest developments, particularly the presence of the French research vessel Abeille Marengo, which triggered renewed tensions between the two countries, Fidan offered a reassuring assessment.
“Everything is normal, everything is fine,” he said.
The question was put to the Turkish foreign minister by SKAI's Turkey correspondent, Manolis Kostidis, who asked him to comment on the electricity interconnector project and the dispute between Athens and Ankara over the NAVTEX notices.
Meanwhile, Turkish diplomatic sources have said that the issue surrounding the NAVTEX notices issued in connection with the electricity interconnector project has been resolved.
Tensions between Greece and Turkey have remained in focus over the project, which aims to establish an electricity link between Greece and Cyprus, amid disagreements over the maritime areas in which survey operations are being conducted.
The latest developments, including the presence of the French research vessel, have once again brought the two countries' differences over the project into the spotlight.
