A driverless bus was involved in a collision with a tram in Gothenburg on Monday, the first day it was operating with passengers on board, Swedish public transport operator Vasttrafik said.
The bus has been taken out of service for inspection, Vasttrafik spokesperson Patrik Tsi told AFP.
“The autonomous bus with passengers in Gothenburg braked and was hit from behind by a tram. There were no injuries or material damage,” he said.
The vehicle had been operating in central Gothenburg since late March, but Monday was the first day it carried passengers. A driver was also on board and ready to take control if needed.
Sweden’s transport agency, Transportstyrelsen, had approved the use of the bus by passengers for a trial period due to run until July 31, 2027.
Autonomous buses operate under local permits, granted by city and by route. The EU has not yet issued Europe-wide authorisations for the commercial rollout of autonomous public transport or robotaxis.
