Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi had admitted that her office leaked footage showing the alleged abuse of a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman military facility.

Israel’s military has dismissed former Military Advocate General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi from service over the leak of a video showing Israeli soldiers allegedly abusing a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention facility in 2024.

Tomer-Yerushalmi, a major general and the former top legal officer in the Israel Defense Forces, resigned in 2025 after acknowledging that her office had leaked the footage to the media. In her resignation letter, she said the leak was intended to counter what she described as false claims against the military’s law enforcement authorities.

The video, broadcast by Israel’s Channel 12 in August 2024, showed soldiers taking a Palestinian detainee aside and using shields to block visibility. The detainee was reported to have suffered serious injuries, including broken ribs and internal injuries.

Five Israeli reservists were later accused of severe abuse and causing serious bodily harm. The case caused deep divisions in Israel, with some condemning the alleged abuse and others defending the soldiers during the war in Gaza.

The military said Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir decided to dismiss Tomer-Yerushalmi because of the prolonged criminal proceedings and the seriousness of the alleged actions and suspicions against her. According to the military, she will not be entitled to benefits linked to the completion of her service.

Defence Minister Israel Katz welcomed the decision, saying that anyone who “slanders” Israeli soldiers had no place in the army.

The Sde Teiman facility was set up at a military base to hold Palestinians detained mainly in the Gaza Strip after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, which began with the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023.

Human rights organisations and Palestinian prisoner advocacy groups have repeatedly accused Israeli authorities of mistreating Palestinian detainees. Israel’s military has said it investigates allegations of abuse.
