Lebanon’s president condemned the latest attacks as a dangerous escalation after new casualties were reported in the south and east of the country.

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun has accused Israel of undermining efforts to stabilise the ceasefire and move towards an end to the war, after a new wave of deadly strikes hit the country’s south and east.

The Lebanese Health Ministry said the attacks had killed 21 people and wounded 39 since Wednesday night, according to an updated toll. The casualties were reported as Lebanon and regional actors were assessing the possible impact of a recent memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, aimed at supporting a broader cessation of hostilities in the Middle East.

In a statement issued by the presidency, Aoun described the latest strikes as “a dangerous and condemnable escalation”, saying they had killed “dozens of innocent people, including women and children”.

He said the attacks were weakening all ongoing efforts to consolidate the ceasefire and bring the war to an end, particularly after the diplomatic developments between Washington and Tehran.

The memorandum of understanding, signed on Wednesday, seeks to pave the way for a pause in hostilities across the region, including in Lebanon. Aoun’s remarks underline Beirut’s concern that continued Israeli military action could derail those efforts and prolong the conflict.
