Ahmed Oweisa, the cameraman who was killed along with two other people, was targeted in a strike on a house in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, according to the civil defence, an emergency services body that is part of the governing apparatus of the Islamist movement Hamas.
The Qatar-based television network announced his death in what it said was a drone strike, describing it as a “deliberate killing.”
It noted that Ahmed Oweisa was the 12th Al Jazeera employee to have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the war on October 7, 2023.
The Israeli army confirmed that it had carried out a “precision strike” and had “eliminated” Ahmed Oweisa, whom it described as a “Hamas terrorist.”
According to figures from the NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF), by the end of 2025 more than 220 journalists had been killed by Israeli fire in the Gaza Strip, including at least 70 while carrying out their professional duties, since the war began in October 2023.
Earlier, overnight from Friday to Saturday, a strike on a building in the Sabra neighbourhood in Gaza City killed four members of the Safadi family – the parents and their two daughters – according to civil defence.
Another 12 people were injured in that strike, the same source added.
At least 1,012 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire came into effect, according to the health ministry of the Hamas-run government, whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations.
During the same period, the Israeli army says it has suffered five fatalities.
